deck carpeting::I am thinking about putting carpeting down over the deck to both improve the looks and to keep any insects from crawling up through the deck boards.
Does not want a glued down carpeting, nor anything that is viewed as a permanent installation.
I would appreciate any suggestions, 1.
As to whether even putting carpeting down is a good idea 2.
If it is acceptable to do, what kind of carpeting should i use, 3.
Can i use double side tape to hold the carpeting down.
Answer hi fred, putting down carpet over your deck does have some downsides.
Mainly the fact that water will be allowed to linger longer on the wood as the carpet will take longer to dry.
This excess water can potentially damage the integrity of the decking even though it is pressure treated.
Polypropylene is also called olefin and is what outdoor grass is made of, it is most water resistant of all synthetic fibers.
This doublefaced tape must be installed on a dry day after the decking has have several days of dry weather to ensure good adhesion.
Even in the best of circumstances this type of application will not yield long term durabilty and the carpet will eventually start to develop wrinkles and wear that cannot be fixed.
Hot weather, cold nights, rain and foot traffic will force you to replcae this carpet at least every other year to keep it looking real nice.
To prolong life and help preserve your decking you can rol up the carpet in the winter and put it back down with new doublefaced tape when the nice weather returns in the spring.
I live in a condo too and i understand the position of the association who are responsible for maintaing the integrity of the complex.
This solution provides the best scenario for you and the association, keeping your costs low, and helping to preserve the decking for years to come.
